| E! Online Interview - 9/14/2002 |

*Opens with 'Ode To Billie Joe' playing in background*

Jules Asner: I would not have known.
Steve Kmetko: I'd love to be able to sit here and say that Bobby Gentry is joining us.
Jules: Uh huh.
Steve: But I love even more saying Megan Mullally is joining us.
Jules: I would never have known that was her singing voice.
Steve: 'Ode To Billie Joe' a cut from her new CD which she was plugging like this (waves CD back and forth), I can do it too on her behalf. Megan, are you out there in TV land? There you are.
Megan Mullally: Yes Im over here.
Steve: Oh.
Megan: And you're over there. (laughs)
Steve: Yes. What are you doing there anyway, why aren't you here?
Megan: I don't know, its confusing isn't it? I-I feel so lonely here without you.
Steve: We miss you too.
(Megan laughs)
Steve: Why is the new CD called, 'Big As A Berry?'
Megan: Uh absolutely no reason whatsoever. It-uh-we modeled the, uh, graphic design of the record on this, um, guy named Paul Rand who's a famous graphic designer and he wrote a children's book that we sort of, um, stole basically his ideas from.
(everyone laughs)
Megan: And one of the-one of the-that's what it boils down to-and one of the little lines in a verse from his children's story was big as a berry and somebody just said "oh that's the title" and then everybody agreed so, thats how it happened.
Steve: And for-
Megan: It means nothing.
Steve: For those of you- (laughs) It means something. For those of you folks, uh, at home who-who may not have known it, Megan is a very talented singer we've seen her, uh, perform live here in Los Angeles, uh, and also she was on Broadway in, uh, "How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying" and on Broadway in "Grease," another musical with Rosie O'Donnell and she has quite the voice.
Megan: (laughs) Thank you.
Jules: And is this your second CD?
Megan: Yeah, uh, we-I have a band called Supreme Music Program and that's who this album is with. It's me and these three guys-three players and I'm the singer and we made another record a couple years ago that we just put out on our own and uh, now this one is with a little label called Fynsworth Alley and it's coming out on September 17th.
Steve: Which is just around the corner.
*mumbling*
Steve: Some of the cuts on-on the CD include 'Ode To Billie Joe' which we heard, that wonderful song by The Beatles, 'She Came In Through The Bathroom Window,' which I love. Um, 'Lonely At The Top' and 'Real Emotional Girl' which are two Randy Newman numbers.
Megan: Yeah.
Steve: And-and 'Danny Boy.'
Megan: Mmhmm.
Steve: Which is kind of a traditional song.
Megan: Mmhmm.
Steve: How did you chose the cuts that you were gonna put on it?
Megan: Well they're all covers obviously and um, there-it's a very eclectic mix of stuff, you know theres a country song and there's this and that, and everything in between. Little something for everyone I suppose. But, um, the point is not for it to be incredibly eclectic, the point is just that we try to pick songs that we think are great songs that may have been overlooked or need a revisit and um, also things that um, we can kind of deconstruct and put our own spin on a little bit and its kind of lo-fi. We actually recorded the whole album in two and a half days which is pretty quick. (laughs)
Steve: That's pretty fast yeah.
Megan: Yeah.
Steve: That's faster then you shoot an episode of Will & Grace that's for sure.
Megan: (laughs) That's right.
Jules: And speaking of-
Steve: It comes highly recommended by me, so go out and buy it.
Jules: Yes it does.
Megan: Aww that's nice.
Jules: And speaking of Will & Grace, we were talking during the break. The Emmy's are coming up-
Megan: Mmhmm.
Jules: The show is nominated for 13 Emmy's.
Megan: (laughs) Yeah.
Jules: It's gotta be getting really busy for you.
Megan: Yeah.
Jules: You won in 2000.
Megan: No dress.
Jules: I-I'm going through, I-I'm trying to get you to say something here Megan.
(Megan and Steve laugh)
Jules: You won in 2000, we talked to you then. You're nominated, how do you feel?
Megan: Well, I mean it's fantastic and it's great for the show, it's so, um, it-it's such great, you know, publicity for our, for the show and it gets probably more people aware of the show if they're not already. And it's a really flattering thing for me to be nominated and I just, you know, it's, it's a thrill. I dont have a dress.
Steve: And-and you told us you dont have a dress. Why, why not?
Megan: No, Im counting on Jules. Well uh, I-I dont really know (laughs) but I don't. So I-I said I may be going down to the Singer sewing store and buying some Buderick patterns and just a needle and thread and take care of it myself.
Jules: Do you want to send out a plea now to designers everywhere to send you something?
Megan: (laughs) Yes. Please clothe me so I'm not arrested for indecent exposure.
Steve: (laughs) You know Scarlett O'Hara just turned to the drapes. (laughs) And wore them.
Megan: (laughs) I know, wait, hold on. (looks around studio)
(everyone laughs)
Jules: And what was the line? I saw them in the window-
Steve: And I just had to have them. (laughs)
Jules: Yes. Oh Steve, we are such an old couple.
(everyone laughs)
Steve: Yeah kinda. One of us older then the other. Well it's so nice to talk to you Megan and we cant wait to see you uh, on the 22nd.
Megan: Well, I know, it's only a matter of days.
Steve: Yeah it is.
Jules: And we-
Megan: Till we're tearfully reunited.
Steve: (laughs) Yes.
Jules: And then uh, Will & Grace also premieres that week right after the Emmy's right?
Megan: Yeah, mmhmm, the next week, yeah.
Steve: And I just got the news this afternoon that you, somehow or another behind my back you went out and got engaged.
Megan: I'm sorry.
Steve: I'm broken-hearted.
Megan: Well....
Steve: And we'll talk about that more later.
Megan: Didn't move fast enough.
Jules: Steve....
Steve: (laughs) I never do, you know you, arthirtic knees honey.
(everyone laughs)
Steve: Thanks for joining us Megan.
Jules: And wait, you're in New York cause you're gonna be signing at Tower Records on the 17th.
Megan: Yes, yes I am, um, uh, um, yes, Im signing and doing and having and loving.
Steve: Okay, drop by and see Megan in New York at Tower Records on the 17th.
(Megan laughs)
Steve: We're going to listen to a little more music as we say thank you very much and we'll be right back.
